Olympique Marseille – Konyaspor
Olympique Marseille hosts Konyaspor in a first game from Group I of the Europa League. The match is going to be played at the legendary Stade Velodrome in the city of Marseille.
Just like many other times, Olympique Marseille started the new season in the most inconsistent way possible – with two wins in the first two games, followed by a draw and two losses. In the last two games Rudi Garcia’s team conceded 9 goals and scored just 2. For sure this is not a stat to be proud of.
There was a time when Olympique Marseille was ruling French and European football. Now these times seem to be over. The club is not along the favourites to win the league, neither along the favourites to win Europa League. They still have a decent team, but most surely – not a great one.
In Ligue 1 Marseille will play with the Champions League in mind, but the more realistic goal seems to be another qualification for the Europa League. The fans might not really like this, but this is the objective truth in this case.
As for Konyaspor, they are one of the ambitious Turkish clubs who are not shy of their ambitions. Last season Konyaspor performed more than good in the Super Lig, qualifying for the Europa League. Now they will try do to at least the same, although the competition for that is really great.
Of course, Olympique Marseille are the favourites in this game, especially at the Velodrome. But do not forget that Turkish football is enjoying high levels in the last years, so do not underrestimate Konyaspor too easily. This could be a big mistake from you.
The other two teams in this group are Salzburg and Vitoria Guimaraes, so we expect interesting games until the end of the group stages.
